ISSUE NO. 14 | OCTOBER 2024
About the October Issue:
Issue No. 14 | Women Speaking
There was a time, not too long ago, when Armenian women were prohibited from speaking to their husband's relatives or in the presence of men. We discuss this practice, which is depicted in one of the most famous Armenian monuments and a symbol of Artsakh, We Are Our Mountains, now (not surprisingly to us) appropriated by Azerbaijan after having occupied Artsakh a year ago and expelling its indigenous population. The rest of Issue No. 14 turns our attention to women speaking, as a necessary and liberating act. We review the current exhibition (what is left of us) by the New York-based/Lebanon-rooted interdisciplinary artist Annabel Daou, whose work plays with borrowed language, and interview two Montreal-based/Armenian-rooted artists (also with ties to Lebanon), Patil Tchilinguirian and Muriel Ahmarani Jaouich, who use their art as a method of documenting and navigating intergenerational trauma. May we find new symbols in our quest for liberation.

The Armenian people, worldwide, are in a state of despair. 100 years after the Armenian Genocide, we saw that the loss of our people, homeland, and culture has not ended, most recently with the violent uprooting of Artsakh. We founded QAMI JAN in 2022 to uplift your spirit, to create a renewed sense of hope and resistance. We do this by focusing on our ancient culture and supporting local artisans. We are not relics. We are very much alive. And we will return.
Please join us in sharing the QAMI JAN spirit.
